Chris Brown walked out of a London courtroom on Monday with a prison sentence hanging over his head, but no time to serve unless he troubles the law again.

The R&B star, 37, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray over the February 2023 attack on music producer Abraham Diaw inside Tape nightclub in Mayfair.

Brown had faced up to three years in prison.

“The Law Applies Equally to Everyone”

Judge Tony Baumgartner did not soften the facts. Prosecutors said Brown struck Diaw, a former friend, with a heavy tequila bottle, hitting him twice in the head, and that video footage played in court showed Brown having to be pulled away.

“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous,” the judge said. “It carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained.”

He also addressed the fame in the room directly, telling Brown that his celebrity, commercial success, and professional standing do not entitle him to special treatment, and that the law applies equally to everyone.

The Night at Tape

The case stems from the early hours of February 19, 2023, at the private members club in Hanover Square. Diaw was treated in hospital for injuries to his head and knee.

Brown was not arrested until May 2025, when he returned to Britain for tour dates and was picked up at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester. He was released after posting a £5 million security fee, and his Breezy Bowl XX tour went ahead while the case moved through the courts.

He pleaded guilty to affray in July, after more serious charges were dropped.

A Second Sentence in the Same Case

Brown did not stand alone. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray and was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months.

Why Brown Is Not Going to Prison Today

The judge pointed to Brown’s guilty plea, entered at the first reasonable opportunity, along with his stable employment, his charity work, and a clean record in recent years, in deciding the sentence could be suspended.

A suspended sentence means the eight months hangs over Brown for the next 12 months. Stay out of trouble and it is never served. Offend again in that window and the court can activate it.

Fans lined up outside the court before it opened, and Brown thanked the judge before leaving the dock, nodding toward his supporters in the public gallery.

Fans React

Reaction online split fast. Supporters called the sentence a fair outcome for a man who pleaded guilty and has kept his record clean, while critics argued a bottle attack in a crowded club deserved real time. What both sides agreed on: the judge’s line about the law applying equally to everyone is the sentence people will remember.
