Beenie Man has another plaque to add to the wall. His 1997 dancehall anthem ‘Who Am I (Sim Simma)’ was certified Gold in the United Kingdom on Friday, October 23, 2026, more than two decades after its release.
The certification, awarded by the British Phonographic Industry, covers 400,000 units in the UK, counting sales and streaming together.
A song that never left the dancefloor
Released in 1997, ‘Who Am I (Sim Simma)’ rode the Playground rhythm built by producer and manager Jeremy Harding. It peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 15 on the Billboard R&B/hip-hop songs chart, and No. 10 in the UK.
Harding said the song has become a dancehall anthem all over the world, and that he is glad it has finally gotten an official status of accomplishment.
Why it still matters
The track appears on Beenie Man’s Grammy-nominated album The Many Moods of Moses. The UK Gold is only his second certification there, following Silver for ‘Dude’ with Miss Thing six years ago. The song picked up the same Gold honour in America almost three years earlier.
For fans who grew up on the Sim Simma chant, the plaque is a long overdue stamp on a song that never really left the party. More than 25 years on, it still fills a dancefloor the moment the rhythm drops.
