Reggae Boyz Book Mexico Quarterfinal After Gritty Draw in Honduras

Jamaica and Mexico footballers contest the ball during a CONCACAF match

One point in Tegucigalpa was all it took. Jamaica’s 1-1 draw with Honduras on October 5 sealed the Reggae Boyz a place in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals, and set up a mouth-watering clash with Mexico next month.

“We did what we set to do: qualify for the next round,” head coach Rudolph Speid said after the match, noting both sides could walk away satisfied. Honduras avoided relegation from League A while Jamaica advanced.

The Boyz entered the night sitting second in their group on six points, fresh off a 2-0 away win over El Salvador, and missing forward Leon Bailey. They got the job done anyway, grinding out the result that mattered in one of the region’s toughest away venues.

Now comes the real test. The quarterfinals will be played over two legs in November: the first leg is expected on November 12 or 13, likely at Kingston’s National Stadium, “The Office,” with the return leg on November 17 at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, a historic first for Mexico’s men’s team at that ground.

Elsewhere in the draw, the United States face Haiti, Panama take on Curacao, and Canada meet Guatemala.

But for Jamaican fans, all eyes are on November. Mexico versus Jamaica. The Office. This is the one we’ve been waiting for.
